The Japanese Abacus Math School is at 15188 N.W. Central Drive, Suite 219. JAMS Director Miwako Sakabayashi previously taught out of her home in Tigard and in a Beaverton location before moving to Bethany in September..

Sixty-four students are enrolled, ranging from pre-kindergarten to 10th grade. Sakabayashi says a 69-year-old grandmother also is enrolled.

Ryan Figg, a first-grader at Terra Linda Elementary School, began attending JAMS in November. His mom, Susan Figg, finds the program impressive, saying there is a lot of one-on-one time. She adds with a surprised tone, "He asks to do his homework." Figg says Sakabayashi is able to recognize the problem-solving style of each student.

Summer sessions begin June 22. Details: 503-520-1063.
