Welcome to The News Bead!

As the school year is winding down, at JAMS, we’re gearing up for our summer camps and classes. Spaces are filling up quickly, so please call today to make sure you reserve your spot. I’m also excited about an opportunity to begin teaching in the Sherwood School District during the Summer. The opportunity to bring the Abacus to more students is one that I’m very excited about but it means that our Summer schedule will need to be modified. Check out the Summer Camps and Classes section of the newsletter. I’m also looking forward to the Fall and would like to offer a special discount on early registrations... see the special offer section for details! We're also excited about the success of all of our students who are moving up and moving on! See who's graduating and where they're headed in our special congratulations section.

Did you know... As a math tool, the Abacus has been used by the blind in Japan since its first school for the blind was established late in the nineteenth century. They were unable to use ordinary Abacus whose beads easily moved. So a special kind of Abacus for the blind was developed. In the US it is widely used at schools for the blind. In 1965, certified examinations for the visually challenged started.

bead.gifJAMS Featured in Japan's League of Soroban Education Web Site!

An interview with Sensei Miwako recently appeared on the web site of Japan's League of Soroban Education… translated, of course:

I have two reasons why I still have a strong passion for teaching abacus no matter how difficult it is:

First of all, I believe that abacus will experience the same boom as Sushi did as a Japanese symbol in the US. Sushi was not sold at supermarkets 16 years ago when I came to the US. When I told my American friends, "I love Sushi!," they would say, "How can eat that stuff?!" Today, many of those same people love eating sushi, which can be purchased at any supermarket. Once they tried it, they realized how great it is. Abacus, is in much the same situation. Americans are just now learning what a powerful tool it is, and how easy it is to learn the basics. I believe that, just like sushi, when enough people get a taste of it, it's popularity will grow.

Second, abacus enables me to be an American without giving up my Japanese culture and identity. Although it was my decision to come to the US, I was confused and wondering about living here. I hid my identity as a Japanese native and tried to look like and carry myself like other Americans. When I committed myself to teaching the abacus, I rediscovered my confidence and pride in my Japanese heritage. I teach abacus to American students as well as children and adults from all over the world. Through the abacus, I'm teaching the importance of the Japanese heart and I'm passionate about watching that grow in my students.

Miwako's Profile

Miwako learned at Yabe abacus school in Takaoka, Toyama in Japan where she attended lessons 5 days a week. Miwako came to the U.S. on 1993 and the abacus has given her the opportunity to make her way and to have a big impact on the lives of countless young (and not so young) students. For the past 8 years Miwako has run JAMS - The Japanese Abacus Math School. Miwako is very encouraged by the way American students and teachers, in particular, have embraced the abacus and see it as a valuable learning tool.
