Summer’s coming to an end and we’re very excited about the upcoming Fall semester! We’ve gotten several new students and we’re looking forward to meeting with them and watching their skills grow. It’s always fun to get back into the classroom and seeing all of our returning students, as well as the new faces. There’s still time to register for classes if you haven’t done so, but space is filling up quickly, so get your registration and payment in before classes start on September 8 and reserve your child’s space! I’m wrapping up my trip abroad and will be glad to get back home to all of the happy faces!

JAMS
Makes a Positive Difference
We recently received this wonderful testimonial letter from Shelly Hudspeth, mother of one of our students:
Our son started JAMS abacus classes when he was 13. Challenged by Tourette
Disorder tics, math has always been difficult for him because of the required
sustained concentration and abstract nature. Writing is also very difficult
for a Tourette individual - our son's hand gets tired easily and traditional
math takes many hours of drill and practice.
Entering middle school, he was stuck, behind, and not able to learn his multiplication
facts. He is a normal bright child, and as a teacher, I knew he could learn
math concepts and calculation with a different method and in the right setting.
Sensei Miwako is a gifted teacher. She is able to multitask with a number of
students and still be able to keep her students on task. When our son gets
stuck he is not as frustrated as he was before in his public school classroom.
Sensei is able to redirect him and he moves on. He enjoys his abacus math class,
and his “Homework” is not such a negative chore as before.
Our son's progress has given him a new confidence with his attitude about math
and using math both in and out of the classroom. He is very proud when he is
able to use Anzan or mental math to compute his change from a purchase before
it is given. He has learned his multiplication facts and is now calculating
using multiplication and division on his abacus. He is making connections with
real life math by himself because he has the skills to figure things out. His
teacher at school has requested he bring his abacus to school so he can use
it to reinforce these skills.
We are happy with our decision to try Miwako’s program and look forward to
our son's continued progress.

Does
Your Child Want to Show Their Skills?
As JAMS becomes more and more popular we’re getting invited to present the abacus to a wide variety of groups and events. Having a student along to showcase their abilities is always a great way to share the power of mental math with others. If your child would like to participate in these events (some of them take place in the evenings and on weekends), please let us know so we can keep them in mind as opportunities come up. You can often invite your family and friends to events, so it is also a great way to show them what your child is learning at JAMS.
